Google claims, as reported by the Telegraph, Friday (8/6/2010), although many users are happy with all the possibilities offered by Google’s Wave, but it is not comparable with the enthusiasm that occurs when the new wave.

“Google Wave gives you the possibility to do what can not be done by a web browser. We show the process of typing the letters in real time and the ability to drag-and-drop files from the desktop. Although the Wave has a loyal user but we can not seem Wave adoption up in accordance with our desire, as well as consumers. We plan to stop the development of Wave as a stand-alone product, “said Urs Hölzle Google’s SVP of Operations.

Hölzle said that if Google still will allow the users to bid farewell to the Wave until the end of this year. Wave technology eventually will be buried in another Google project, and allow other developers to use it.

“Wave has taught us many things and we are proud to have worked with the team to explore ways out of their computer science skills,” said Hölzle.

“We are very enthusiastic with the other innovations which we will develop in the future. We continue to innovate with the potential to advance the technology and the wider web,” he said.

Although many People in the tech industry who believed from the beginning if Google Wave has a poor performance, but the news about the Wave cessation by Google provide sufficient means surprises.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt tried to give support to the team and the users Wave. “Our policy is to try many things. We celebrate this failure. This means that we are a company that has a tolerance for failure. If not successful, no matter. We will learn more in the technology and will apply them to something new,” he said

Quoted from the Telegraph, Wednesday (14/07/2010), tools of this SDK has been tested extensively by a group of developers ‘amateurs’ are not so expert in computers, including school children and students.

Google says, the goal of launching this SDK tool is the ease that lets anyone create applications for their phones. Google realized, it is only possible with the platforms ‘open’.

“The aim is to enable every person in the mobile world this could be a creator, not just being a consumer,” said computer scientist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Harold Abelson who has tried this SDK tools.

Abelson added, he was very sure, this kind of project will support the rapid growth in mobile applications.

Users who want to register the program for the Android Google App Inventor must first have a Gmail email account and Android based phones. The reason this web-based tools so that users must connect their phones to a computer using a USB cable.

So far, more than 100 thousand open applications developed for the Google Android platform. Now, Android enthusiasts is also growing. One of them joined in the community Android mailing list.

Google Voice is one of management in mobile applications that can be used for free. Google’s launch on June 22 last. This service lets users make calls to landline or mobile phone using a special number from Google.

Google to realize these services after the company bought Gizmo5, an Internet-based voice applications (VoIP) which allows users make phone calls over the Internet.

Gizmo5 is also an application used by Google to compete with Skype. Today, Gizmo5 has attracted approximately 500 million users, which enables telephone calls from desktop to desktop, or desktop to the phone.

“We developed Google Voice to be used from any device, but specifically we will maximize use of the web, which is the world’s best user interface, to allow you to control and personalize your communications on services,” said Product Manager of Google Voice Vincent Paquet , as quoted by eWeek, Monday (05/07/2010).

Hence, to accelerate the implementation google Voice on the desktop, Internet users have joined hundreds in a petition giveusgvdesktop.com. This petition was launched since July 2 last. Unfortunately, despite the target 500 000 signatures, only 509 new people who expressed support.

LAS VEGAS – Since Google Chrome released, the speed of JavaScript in the browser’s performance is still less than its competitors.

Seeing this, Google will answer these criticisms in the latest series of Chrome 5.0.375.29 Beta running on Linux, Mac and Windows. Google promised to improve JavaScript performance again.

JavaScript performance in Chrome will have the support of Google’s V8 technology. According to Google, Chrome 5.0.375.29 Beta claimed will have speeds up to 30 to 35 percent than its predecessor, depending on the benchmark used by JavaScript.

Cited by IT Management, Thursday (05/06/2010), overall, the performance of JavaScript benchmarks have been increased to 305 percent on the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark since the first beta release of Chrome in the year 2008.

Some tool vendors other browsers such as Opera, Apple and Mozilla have all been actively competing for the last few years in the field of JavaScript performance. At various points, each vendor claiming the upper hand over their rivals.

In addition to improvements V8, Chrome 5.0.375.29 Beta is the first beta version of Chrome which directly integrate the Adobe Flash Player plugin as part of the browser. Unlike other browsers which is separate from the Flash browser plugin, it seems Google has taken a different route.

“You will automatically receive security updates and features to the Flash Player with auto-update mechanism for Chrome,” wrote Mads Ager, a software engineer at Google, in a blog posting.

Security researchers in the past have reported that Flash is a dangerous risk for web users, who rarely update the software regularly to avoid the latest security vulnerabilities. potential problem could be solved by the automatic update of Google.

In addition, Google Chrome also develop the ability to synchronize the new beta release. Chrome has the ability to bookmark-syncing since August 2009. Starting with Chrome 5.0.375.29 Beta, users can also synchronize your browser preferences, such as the startup settings and themes as well.

With this technology, Google will integrate the web with TV.

Google TV technology called streaming TV was carrying the concept of web-based, including the ability of a web browser application, with the large size TV in the living room ready to be enjoyed. In addition, the Google TV is also connected directly to television sets and other devices such as Blue ray player.

Reportedly the user can access Internet functions such as online search, and play YouTube videos. There are also web applications for games, social networking and Google’s Wave. With this form of communication via the Internet, sharing photos, videos or maps can be enjoyed through a TV.

A Metamorphosis HDTV into a giant web terminal, is now simmering ripe-ripe by Google. With this, Google will compete with the internet industry players such as Netflix streaming TV, Vudu, or Apple TV.

As quoted from Yahoo News, Sunday (02/05/2010) The search engine giant will partner with Intel, Sony, and Logitech. Maybe this is the first television products that use the ‘brains’ Intel Atom.

Google TV is also going to use the Android operating system and technology to Logitech and Sony. Touch screen television will also be equipped with a keyboard making it easier for users surfing the virtual world.

When the time comes? Just wait for the results of Google conference titled ‘Google I / O conference’, which was held May 19 to 20 coming in San Francisco. About 3,000 developers would gather there.

The development of HTML5, next-generation standard web pages, continues to be encouraged by Google. Google scientists had successfully used it to run the game Quake.

As quoted from the official Google Web Toolkit blog, Saturday (3/4/2010), the legendary three-dimensional game Quake works with HTML5 Tested By Google researchers.

the Quake game which in its time need big computer resources now can run on an Internet browser smoothly. By using HTML5, and even run without the plug ins like Adobe Flash.

“We were really surprised to see games that can penetrate to 30 frames per second in our laptops,” wrote Chris Ramsdale from the Google Web Toolkit team.

Quake version that used are Quake II. Researchers at Google’s expanding from Jake2, Quake II port to Java, then use the Google Web Toolkit and other technologies.

Though still a laboratory product, which performed this experimental success shows the potential of HTML5 is quite interesting. In addition to the games, HTML5 browsers will be able to play any video without the need plug ins.

To prove it, researchers have been showing a video on YouTube. In addition, they also share the code behind the experiment.

Speed Up Static Resources

Gears can speed up your web application using the LocalServer module. WordPress, a popular blogging platform, uses Gears and the LocalServer module to significantly improve the performance of common operations. WordPress incorporates a rich text editor that makes authoring posts much easier. However, this editor has a ton of associated resources, such as CSS, JavaScript, images, etc. (more than a hundred!). Downloading these resources, including seeing if they have changed using traditional HTTP caching, can affect the performance of using the editor, especially on latent connections.

Instead, WordPress decided to download all of these resources into a Gears LocalServer. The Gears LocalServer makes it possible to version a bundle of resources, such as JavaScript, CSS, etc. and grab them in one shot. Once files have been stored in the Gears LocalServer they are served up locally and immediately, blitting to the screen right when the page is first hit.

A common question is how this is different than standard HTTP caching. Standard HTTP caching can only version individual resources, and must do validity checks on every resource at regular intervals which can affect page load time. The Gears LocalServer instead versions an entire bundle, efficiently checking that resources have changed only if the version on the bundle itself has changed. Another major difference is that Gears always serves the resources first, then revalidates the bundle. In traditional HTTP caching, you have to either choose between choosing some date far in the future to revalidate at, or revalidating before serving.

Cache Data and Use Search Locally

A great next step is to use the Gears’ Full Text Search capabilities to give your users very fast local search. This can be used in conjunction with the Gears Database module to cache commonly used data for faster display and retrieval.

MySpace does this with their MySpace Mail feature. They download all of a users messages in the background using a Gears WorkerPool, index them into the Database for quick retrieval, and then drop a search form on to the page. As a user types the local database is queried in real-time, with the results shown instantaneously on the page without the latency of a round-trip server call.

You can also use the local database to cache commonly used data, such as zip code lookup tables or employee contact information. For example, MySpace uses this to provide fast, client-side sorts. A user can click the sort icon while viewing messages to sort by read/unread, date sent, sender, etc. Rather than having to return to the server, affecting performance, the sort happens very fast on the client-side using SQL against the local database.

GMail Drive

by: viksoe.dk

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Mail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the
My Computer
folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a Gmail e-mail account, which includes storage space of 6000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your Google Mail Account and retrieve them again.
When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the Gmail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.
You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag’n'drop like you’re used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the Gmail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in Gmail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the
GMAILFS
letters in the subject) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There’s still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 65 characters). Since the tool hooks up with the free Gmail Service provided by Google, changes in the Gmail system may break the tool’s ability to function. I cannot guarantee that files stored in this manner will be accessible in the future.
